Boiler Service or Gas Safety Check: Which Do You Need?

Start with what you need the visit to achieve
A boiler service and a gas safety check both relate to the safe operation of gas appliances, but they answer different questions. A service is about the boiler’s condition and maintenance. A safety check is about assessing whether the relevant gas appliances meet safety requirements.
That difference matters when you book. If you choose based only on the word “check”, you may end up with a visit that does not address the reason you called. Think about the outcome you need first: ongoing care for your boiler, or a safety assessment for a particular purpose.
Choose a boiler service for ongoing maintenance
If your boiler is working and you want it assessed as part of its routine care, a Boiler Service is the relevant option. The aim is to look at the boiler as an appliance that has been in use, rather than simply answer whether it passes a safety assessment at that moment.
That distinction is useful even when there is no obvious problem. A boiler can continue to provide heating while parts gradually wear or its operation changes. Maintenance gives an opportunity to assess its condition and identify issues that may need attention. It is not the same as calling for a repair after a fault has stopped the heating or hot water.
When arranging a service, tell us the boiler make and model if you know them, and mention any changes you have noticed. A change in operation can help explain what you want the visit to focus on. If the boiler has stopped working or is showing a fault, say so when you contact us: you may need a repair rather than a routine service.
Choose a gas safety check for a safety assessment
If your main need is a gas safety assessment, book the type of check that matches your circumstances. We provide Landlord Gas Safety Checks and Homeowner Gas Safety Checks, as well as boiler servicing. Our Gas Safe registration is relevant to this gas work, but it does not make the two types of appointment interchangeable.
For a landlord, the key question is whether you need the relevant safety check and its associated record. Make that clear when booking instead of assuming a routine boiler service will meet the requirement. For a homeowner who wants a safety assessment rather than ongoing boiler maintenance, explain that purpose when you enquire so the right service can be discussed.
A gas safety check should not be treated as a substitute for routine boiler maintenance. Equally, booking a service does not automatically mean you have arranged the specific safety check or record you need. If you are unsure, describe the property, who uses it, and what document or outcome you are seeking. That gives us a clearer basis for identifying the appropriate appointment.
Use the reason for booking to make the choice
A few simple questions can help you decide:
- Is the boiler operating, and are you looking for routine care? Ask about a boiler service.
- Do you need a gas safety assessment for a rental property? Ask about a Landlord Gas Safety Check.
- Are you a homeowner seeking a safety assessment rather than maintenance? Ask about a Homeowner Gas Safety Check.
- Has the boiler developed a fault? Explain the symptoms and ask whether a repair visit is more suitable.
These are starting points, not a way to diagnose a boiler yourself. Tell us what you need, and ask what the appointment covers and what record you will receive. That is especially important if you need a particular form of evidence for your records.
If you are between the two options
It is reasonable to be uncertain when you want both reassurance about safety and attention to the boiler’s condition. Be specific about both aims when you contact us rather than assuming one appointment automatically covers everything. We can discuss whether you need a service, a gas safety check, or both, based on the purpose of the visit.
Here at County Gas Services, we provide boiler servicing and gas safety checks in Towcester and across our service areas, including Northampton, Wellingborough and Rushden. If you are not sure which appointment fits, tell us what prompted your enquiry and what you need from the visit. That conversation can help you book the right service from the outset.
