Signs you need a boiler service, and what to do next
Signs you need a boiler service: early warnings and simple checks
A boiler that is noisy, losing pressure or behaving unpredictably is telling you it needs attention. After 25 years working on Northampton homes I have seen the same warning signs time and again. Deal with them early to avoid cold radiators, a broken down boiler at the worst time, or a safety issue.
Common, practical signs you need a service
Persistent low pressure or frequent pressure loss, shown on the boiler gauge. This often points to a leak in the system or a failing component. Check the gauge and note whether pressure drops over days.
Strange noises such as kettling, banging, or clanking from the boiler or radiators. Limescale build up, poor water flow or a failing pump are usual causes.
Yellow or lazy flame in a visible pilot area, rather than a crisp blue flame. This can indicate poor combustion and needs an immediate check by a Gas Safe engineer.
Boiler locking out frequently or showing error codes on the display. Repeated resets are not a long term fix.
Uneven heating, cold spots on radiators or hot water that is intermittent. This can be a sign of sludge, a faulty diverter valve, or control problems.
Visible leaks, corrosion or water around the boiler casing, pipework or cylinder. Any leak deserves prompt attention to prevent further damage.
A noticeable rise in gas use or bills without a change in household use, which can show an inefficient burner or failing component.
Smell of gas or unexplained rotten egg odour. Treat this as an emergency, see the safety section below.
These signs are the keyword for this article. If you have any of these signs you need a boiler service, act now rather than wait for a breakdown.
Immediate safety steps
If you smell gas, open windows, do not use electrical switches or open flames, and evacuate the property. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately.
For water leaks, isolate the system if you can do so safely and turn off the mains water supply to the heating system. Contain the leak and call a Gas Safe engineer.
If the boiler displays a fault code, photograph the code and any error messages. That saves time when you speak to an engineer.
If the issue is not an immediate safety risk, these simple checks help you decide what to tell the engineer:
Note model and serial number of the boiler and cylinder where fitted.
Check the pressure gauge and the thermostat settings.
Record when the issue started and any patterns, for example, whether faults occur only on very cold mornings.
What a proper service covers and why it matters
A full service from a Gas Safe registered engineer checks combustion performance, burner and heat exchanger condition, gas rate, flue and seals, controls and safety devices. The engineer will also clean accessible components, check gas tightness and issue a written service certificate on completion. That certificate is important for manufacturer warranties and for your records.
I am Gas Safe registered and Unvented qualified, and I issue a service certificate after every boiler service. Regular servicing preserves efficiency, reduces the chance of unexpected failures and maintains safe operation.
How often should you have a service?
Most manufacturers and installers recommend an annual service. For older boilers, unvented cylinders, or systems showing any of the signs above, an annual check is good practice. If you rent out a property you will also need regular landlord gas safety checks, which I carry out across Northampton and surrounding areas.
Booking the right engineer
Always choose a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas work. Always choose a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas work. Ask to view their digital Gas Safe registration details and confirm they hold the qualifications relevant to your system, such as unvented cylinder certification. Local knowledge matters. As a Northampton based engineer serving Hunsbury, Moulton, Rushden, Wellingborough and nearby villages, I know local properties, common system installs and what often causes recurring faults in our area.
A good engineer will explain the findings in plain terms, show you any worn parts, and provide a clear service report and certificate. If the job needs parts or further work, you should get a written quote that explains the scope.
What to expect next if you book a service
A safety-focused inspection, cleaning where required and tests to confirm safe combustion.
Advice on whether repairs or parts replacement are needed, and why. I will explain how each repair affects performance and safety.
A service certificate issued on completion, and any recommendations recorded for future attention.
For emergency call-outs I aim for a quick response in Northampton and nearby areas to restore heating where possible and make the property safe.
